Chris Boardman backs cycle to work scheme
An Olympic gold medallist has backed a new drive to get more people to cycle to work.
Chris Boardman, who won the individual pursuit at the Barcelona games in 1992, has joined forces with the Cycle to Work Alliance to promote the advantages of riding on two wheels.
According to the alliance, getting more people onto their bikes could help the UK deal with the rising problem of obesity.
"The cycle to work scheme is an invaluable way of helping individuals take action for their own wellbeing," a spokesman commented.
Boardman was among those to attend the official launch of the Cycle to Work Alliance at the House of Commons this week, alongside representatives of groups such as the British Heart Foundation and Liberal Democrat MP Julian Huppert.
According to the NHS, nearly 50 per of men and more than 33 per cent of women are likely to be obese by 2025.
