Unified communications ''makes sense when offering flexible benefits''
Employers which offer flexible benefits such as telecommuting may find that unified communications offers a simple and cost-effective solution.
The service sees organisations'' web, telephone, email and other communications linked into a single connection.
This means that anyone with a broadband connection at home can carry out their duties as if they were in the office using tools such as a USB headset.
Writing a column for Accounting Web, expert Ralf Ebbinghaus said this technology "makes economic sense" for businesses of all sizes.
He is executive vice president of communications vendor Swyx and pointed out that it can also help firms cut the cost of their office space.
"Most importantly it can improve productivity and provide a genuine competitive edge," he remarked.
Earlier this month, AON Consulting claimed that implementing flexible benefits such as homeworking could reduce costly sick days.
It pointed out that people can take time off for personal reasons but claim to be ill - a situation that a more flexible approach to hours of engagement could help with.
