Employers could offer help as alcoholism treatment is ''underfunded''

Businesses could think about offering private healthcare as part of employee benefits packages, as one charity believes treatment for alcoholism is badly underfunded.

According to the support group Addaction, drugs rehabilitation programmes attract more attention and funding, but more and more stressed employees are having problems with alcohol.

A spokesman for the charity said: "Alcohol is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, problems that we see in our service and while drugs grab the headlines, alcohol causes a hell of a lot of problems."

He added that most adults would know at least one person who had problems with alcohol, which emphasised how widespread the problem currently is.

An open and honest approach to the problem is required at all levels, the spokesman added.

Research by Alcohol Concern released yesterday (July 1st) suggests there are around 1.6 million people in England with alcohol dependencies, with only six per cent able to access treatment.
