Drop in gym membership could suggest the need for flexible benefits packages
Figures showing that gym membership is in decline in the UK may mean that employers offering this enticement within employee benefits packages may need to consider an alternative.
According to Daily Mirror lifestyle guide and fitness guru Steve Halsall, more people are enjoying the outdoors during the summer and are using pathways and hills to exercise rather than treadmills and cross-trainers.
"The trends are suggesting that cycling, running, walking and triathlons even are massive growth areas so people are dropping their gym memberships and going outside more and using outside facilities," he said.
He added that fitness advice was also available for free online, meaning fewer people felt the need to spend money on a personal trainer.
However, Mr Halsall noted that finances may be an important factor in the number of people turning away from their expensive gyms, meaning that it could be the ideal enticement within an employee benefits package.
