Cycle to work schemes in Scotland to gain from government action plan

The Scottish Government has announced a new initiative to get more people using their bikes - which could boost the numbers using cycle to work schemes.

A £3.9 million action plan was launched by transport minister Stewart Stevenson, which pledges to invest around £2.5 million in new cycling infrastructure, such as cycle paths.

In addition, loans will be available to businesses to improve workplace cycling facilities - something which may help improve motivation and retention of employees.

An extra £300,000 will be spent on teaching children how to cycle, while Glasgow''s Connect2 project will gain £500,000 of financing to help create traffic-free paths for cyclists.

The scheme helps cyclists to travel between the city centre, Kelvingrove Park and the West End without having to deal with cars and buses.

Sustrans, a UK sustainable transport charity, works to maintain the national cycle network and has volunteer rangers who look after specific sections of the route, allowing many employees an easy cycle to work every day.
