Social networking ''is changing the workplace''
The use of social networking by employees is already changing the workplace and employers need to address the advantages and drawbacks, according to an expert.
Doug Miles, UK managing director at the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Europe, suggested the use of social media at work was "horrendously unmanaged" and that bosses needed to form a coherent strategy.
Mr Miles said: "For most executives social media is scary, but then so was email when it first came out."
He was speaking at the London leg of the AIIM Roadshow 2010, where he told delegates to consider the positives and negatives, while accepting the fact that social networking had already made its mark on business.
The AIIM conference concentrated on the role of enterprise content management (ECM) systems and their role in business.
Delegates heard that 34 per cent of organisations surveyed had either changed to an ECM system or were in the process of a switch-over.
