BAA ''encourages staff to cycle to work''

BAA is encouraging its staff to cycle to work by making use of a government scheme and associated tax benefits.

Around 800 staff already cycle to Heathrow every day and BAA has built extra cycle lanes as part of its commitment to reducing employee car use by one per cent each year, Travelio reports.

The government-backed cycle to work programme offers tax-benefits remove hyphen and reduced-cost cycle equipment for any employee wishing to bike to their job, provided their employer signs up to the scheme.

BAA is to pass on the VAT saving to employees as well, meaning an extra saving and encouragement to leave the car at home.

The deal also involves Halfords as the supplier of bikes, helmets and lights, with the firm offering free maintenance on all cycles purchased.

In Canada, citizens of Winnipeg are gearing up for their cycle to work day on June 25th, designed to raise awareness of pedalling instead of driving, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
